Important Travel Rules & Tips
-
Total Flexibility: Train tickets in Belgium are not tied to a specific train or departure time. Your ticket is valid for any train on your chosen route for the entire date of purchase. Always buy the “Anytime” ticket if you don’t have a Train+ subscription.
-
No Seat Reservations: You can sit anywhere in your designated travel class (1st or 2nd class). There are no assigned seats.
-
The Airport Surcharge (Diabolo): A standard “Brussels Airport Supplement” is required for all train travel starting or ending at the airport. If you buy a ticket with “Brussels Airport (Zaventem)” as your departure point or destination, this surcharge is automatically included in the price.
-
Keep Your Ticket Handy: Brussels Airport is the only train station in Belgium equipped with security gates. You must scan the 2D barcode on your ticket (either printed or on your smartphone screen) at the gates to access the platforms.
-
Check the Signage: Belgium is multilingual. When checking the digital departure boards, keep in mind that Antwerp is often listed by its French name: Anvers.
